In September 2020, the U.S. National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) published the fifth revision to their data security and privacy guidelines entitled “Security and Privacy Controls for Information Systems and Organizations,” or “Special Publication (SP) 800-53 Revision 5.”
In this first revision since 2013, NIST discusses ways in which federal government and private sector organizations can help mitigate risks, protect data, and prevent data breaches, including addressing threats such as “hostile attacks, human errors, natural disasters, structural failures, foreign intelligence entities, and privacy risks.”
