The dispute began on April 8, 2021, when Roku, Inc. filed a complaint alleging that 18 technology companies had unlawfully imported and sold “certain televisions, remote controls, and components thereof,” which infringed upon two patents relating to a universal remote control system that integrates code and user commands.
