Federal Circuit Affirms District Court Ruling That Found Data Storage Patent Claims Ineligible

    On March 6, 2020, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit affirmed the Patent Trial and Appeal Board’s (PTAB) decision in the matter of Customedia Techs., LLC v. Dish Network Corp., which found certain claims of Customedia’s patents related to comprehensive data management and processing systems ineligible.

    The Federal Circuit found that the claimed invention merely improves the delivery of targeted advertising “using a computer only as a tool” rather than providing “improvements to the operation and functioning of computer systems” as claimed by Customedia.
