Chinese National Faces Prison Time and $477,000 Fine for Trade Secret Misappropriation

    On October 1, 2020, a judge in the U.S. the District Court of Northern California ordered Chinese national Hao Zhang to pay $477,000 in restitution for stealing trade secrets such as “semiconductor recipes, source code, specifications, presentations, design layouts, and other confidential information” from U.S.-based semiconductor manufacturing companies Avago Technologies and Skyworks Solutions.

    Zhang’s indictment also includes an 18-month sentence in U.S. prison for providing the trade secrets to Tianjin University to enable the development of a China-based semiconductor business.
