On January 29, 2020, a jury in the U.S. District Court for the Central District of California ordered Apple to pay $837.8 million and Broadcom to pay $270.2 million to the California Institute of Technology (Caltech) to settle a patent infringement dispute.
The patent dispute began in May 2016, when Caltech alleged that Broadcom components and computer chips used in various Apple products infringed several wireless patents owned by the university.
