Washington Enacts Facial Recognition Law

    On March 31, 2020, Washington enacted a new law governing the use of facial recognition technology by state and local government agencies.

    The law details strict accountability guidelines in an effort to balance the potential benefits of the technology with concerns surrounding data privacy and civil liberties. The law is expected to be used as a model for other states contemplating similar legislation, and will go into effect on July 1, 2021.
