Premera Blue Cross Settles for $10M with 30 States for 2014 Data Breach

    On July 11, 2019, Premera Blue Cross agreed to pay $5.4 million to the Washington State Attorney General’s Office and $4.6 million to 29 states that joined Attorney General Bob Ferguson’s litigation concerning a data breach that affected more than 10.4 million patients.

    The settlement also requires Premera to “map where HIPAA-protected information, including personal health information, is located on the Premera network,” and “provide data security reports, completed by a third-party security expert approved by the multistate coalition, to the Washington State Attorney General’s Office,” among other stipulations.
