New York District Court Finds Patent Claim Invalid in OKCupid Dating App Infringement Dispute

    On March 6, 2020, a judge in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York granted defendant Humor Rainbow Inc.’s motion to dismiss in a patent infringement dispute regarding the company’s mobile dating application OKCupid.

    In March 2019, Plaintiff Ghaly Devices LLC alleged that OKCupid infringed a patent related to an algorithm that assigns a compatibility score to users based on personality data. The Court used the two-step Alice framework to analyze the claim, finding the claim invalid as directed to “the abstract idea of a matchmaking algorithm.”
