Facebook Agrees to Settle BIPA Data Privacy Case for $550 Million

    On January 30, 2020, Facebook agreed to pay $550 million to settle alleged violations of the Illinois Biometric Information Privacy Act (BIPA) in the matter of Nimesh Patel, et al v. Facebook, Inc.

    The case began in May 2015, when three Facebook users alleged that Facebook’s “tag suggestion feature” collects users’ “biometric identifiers and biometric information without informed consent, in direct contravention of the BIPA.”
