Cox Communications Fined $1 Billion Over Willful Copyright Infringement

    On December 19, 2019, a jury in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Virginia found that internet service provider (ISP) Cox Communications had willfully allowed its customers to illegally download copyrighted music.

    The jury awarded 53 music publishers, including Sony Music Entertainment, Universal Music Group, and Warner Music a total of $1 billion for copyright infringement. Cox stated that it plans to appeal the verdict.
