Court Concludes Noninfringement Between Google and Data Engine Techs

    On August 26, 2021, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit confirmed a U.S. District Court for the District of Delaware’s noninfringement decision in the matter of Data Engine Techs. LLC v. Google LLC.

    Data Engine alleged that Google’s Google Sheets product infringed on the “Tab Patents” connected to “systems and methods for displaying and navigating 3D electronic spreadsheets.” The Federal Circuit determined the term “three-dimensional spreadsheet” is limiting and that Google Sheets did not infringe Data Engine’s patent due to the preamble not defining cell positions in all three dimensions.
