On November 12, 2019, a jury in the U.S. District Court for the District of Massachusetts ruled that warrantless searches of smartphones and laptops belonging to international travelers at U.S. ports of entry violate the Fourth Amendment.
The ruling follows a lawsuit filed by the American Civil Liberties Union and the Electronic Frontier Foundation on behalf of 11 travelers whose personal devices were searched without individualized suspicion.
