VA Governor Signs the Virginia Insurance Data Security Act

    On March 11, 2020, Virginia Governor Ralph Northam signed into law the Insurance Data Security Act (HB 1334), which details new cybersecurity compliance regulations for insurers licensed in Virginia and regulated by the Virginia Bureau of Insurance (BOI).

    The Act requires Virginia BOIs to “maintain an information security program, investigate all cybersecurity events, notify the Commissioner of Insurance of cybersecurity events, and notify consumers affected by cybersecurity events,” among other data security regulations. The Act went into effect July 1, 2020.
